We are about two and a half miles from the RSPB reserve at Minsmere which is one of their biggest and best. Marsh Harriers, Bitterns and Avocets are some of the regular feathered visitors. There is also a nice cafe there, which is worth going to on its own. There are guided walks as well as the Minsmere trail and plenty of footpaths outside the reserve. The beach runs along one side and there are circular walks you can do to Dunwich.
We are about the same distance from Dunwich. This was a flourishing city in the middle ages but most of it is now beneath the sea. It has an interesting museum and just a few remnants of the town that flourished so long ago like the Franciscan Priory ruins and remains of the leper hospital. This was located outside the town wall so has not yet been washed away. Coastal erosion is still eating away this coastline.
From Dunwich you can see Southwold in the distance across the marshes, famous for the many beach huts. As well as having a sandy beach, it is an attractive small town with shops, lighthouse and smell of hops from the local brewery. On this side of the river Blyth is another small and attractive village - Walberswick from which you can reach Southwold by a small rowing boat ferry in the summer months or by the bailey bridge a little upstream. From Walberswick up to Blythburgh (where there are more musical occasions in the old church) are more marshes that are so typical of the area.
