Not far away

About eight miles south of Westleton lies elegant Aldeburgh on the coast which has some interesting shops and eating places. You may just want to stroll along by the sea and enjoy the quiet, unrushed atmosphere and open view. If you are feeling more energetic you can walk back along the coast to Thorpeness which has a curious mixture of buildings. On the way you will pass the Scallop sculpture on the beach. This is Maggi Hambling’s tribute to Benjamin Britten and has been the cause of some controversy. It is worth seeing whatever your view.

For culture vultures there is the Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the arts in June, a full season of classical music. Not far away is another well-known musical venue at Snape Maltings. Even if you are not a music fan, the buildings, which are gradually being renovated, are impressive and in an attractive setting.

The list of interesting places is endless. Whichever way you go from here there is something worth seeing and if you are drawn to quiet old towns, big skies, sea and marshes you will love it!
